	Q. A	Does the insurance company cover this procedure? Your initial consultation with the doctor will be covered by your insurance company. If a referral is required, you will need to get that from your primary physician before your consultation. Most insurance companies do cover the procedure. After you initial evaluation with the doctor, we will contact your insurance company for prior authorization.
	Q. A	What are spider, reticular and varicose veins? Varicose veins are the largest ropey veins seen in the legs and spider veins are the smaller, often red or blue colored, veins. Reticular veins are green and are usually not bulging.
	Q. A	What causes spider and varicose veins? Although genetics, childbirth, and female gender can assist in the appearance of these veins, the main cause of these veins is related to the incompetent valves in your superficial vein system. Normally, this blood should go directly to the heart with the help of several valves located throughout these veins. When these valves no longer assist in this process, the blood is forced by gravity in the wrong direction. This will cause the abnormal varicose and spider veins to begin to bulge. This often causes the symptoms of aching, swelling, tiredness, heaviness, cramping, burning and itching.
	Q. A	Is it true that crossing your legs and walking on concrete floor causes spider and varicose veins. No, these are merely wive’s tales and have nothing to do with pathogenesis of varicose veins and spider veins.
	Q. A	Why should I have my veins treated? What would happen if I just left them alone and did nothing at all? Treatment of these veins can help to relieve symptoms. In addition, if they are left untreated, these veins can cause:Phlebitis: is a recurring, painful condition involving the vein and the surrounding skin, which is caused by a blood clot within the vein. The area becomes red, warn, tender, swollen, and hard from the blood clot.Ulceration of the skin: this can also occur, usually around the ankle, and is very painful, often requiring months to heal.Stasis dermatitis: Permanent brown discoloration of the skin, usually also around the ankles, is a frequent sequelae of untreated varicose veins.Bleeding: Although rare, when this occurs it is often frightening because large amounts of blood are usually lost requiring an emergency room visit to suture the bleeding vein.
	Q. A	Why do I need surgery on these veins? These veins are abnormal and will continue to cause problems with the circulation system. Without surgery you could develop more serious vein conditions.
	Q. A	Do I need these veins that are being removed? Your circulation is not damaged by the treatment of these abnormal veins. There are many spare veins that take over when these abnormal veins are removed. In addition, 90% of the blood that passes through the veins in the legs is carried by the deep veins, which are not superficially visible.
	Q. A	What can I do to prevent varicose or spider veins? During your initial consultation with the doctor, measurements will be taken of your legs so that we may order medical compression stockings. These stockings will help alleviate the pressure that is caused by the varicose and spider veins. After your treatments are finished, the compression therapy can assist is keeping these veins from returning.
	Q. A	How many treatments are necessary to remove my veins? The average patient requires three to five treatments per area. Once the doctor evaluates you, it will be easier to determine how many treatments would be necessary to remove all of the veins.
	Q. A	What can I expect after the treatment? Most patients will experience some mild redness and minor swelling. This will go away within the first couple of hours. After several days, some patients may experience some mild bruising which is also normal. This may take several days to a week to go away. This shows that the vein is damaged and will just need to be absorbed by your body.
	Q. A	How long does the treatment take? Most treatments only take about ten to fifteen minutes.
	Q. A	Are there any limitations with this treatment? The only limitation with this treatment is that you cannot have a suntan; this includes sunless tanning sprays, normal sun exposure and tanning salon exposure. This should not be done during your treatment time. Most patients come to their appointments before work, during lunch or after work.
	Q. A	Does it hurt? The laser emits a light energy, which feels like the snap of a rubber band. There is also a feeling of warmth in the areas where the hair is most dense. The treatments are well tolerated. Patients do not require any type of anesthetic cream, pain medication, or sedation.
	Q. A	Will the veins return? If an underlying problem is detected in your superficial vein system, it is very necessary to take care of that. If the problem is corrected, the veins will not return. Also the use of continuous compression therapy when necessary will help reduce the risks of any veins returning.
