Cold Spring Weather Can Make Rosacea Worse: Here's What You Can Do to Reduce Symptoms

As winter blizzards fade and the summer sun’s scorching rays are still safely months away, you may think you have a nice little window during springtime where your skin is less prone to rosacea flares. Unfortunately, spring’s changeable weather poses its own challenges.

At Comprehensive Vein Treatment Center in Trenton, New Jersey, our rosacea specialist, Imtiaz Ahmad, MD, recommends planning ahead so you’re prepared for temperature dips and surges. The following are a few tips to keep your skin comfortable and flare-free this spring:

Peel it off and pile it on

Wearing clothing in layers is a good strategy whenever the weather is cool to cold, but when you have rosacea, it’s even more important. Overheating your body by wearing clothes that are too hot can trigger a flare. Not wearing enough layers exposes your skin to chilly winds.

Just to be safe, carry a scarf in your jacket pocket, and keep extra layers in your car, too. That way, if the weather changes or the winds kick up, you’ll have your protection ready to go.

Wear sunscreen and sunglasses

No, it’s not yet summer, but spring sunburns, too, and sunlight’s the #1 most common rosacea trigger. Wear a non-chemical, physical-block sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 each time you’re outdoors, driving, or working by a sunny window. Reapply every two hours, or even more often if you sweat.

Sunglasses shield your eyes from UVA and UVB damage, but also from wind and irritants. Wear sunglasses whenever you’re outdoors, especially if it’s either sunny or windy.

Hydrate inside and out

When the thermometer plummets at night or on blustery days, dry indoor heat can make your skin tight and itchy, and could even trigger a flare. Counteract the effects of dry air with a humidifier. 

You can buy portable humidifiers to carry to the office or on extended visits so your skin stays comfortable no matter where you go. Be sure to change the filters regularly to keep your indoor air both moist and clean.

Keep yourself hydrated, too, by drinking lots of room-temperature, filtered water. Aim for 810 eight oz. glasses a day, or more if you exercise. Avoid hot or cold beverages that may trigger a flare.

Moisturize regularly

Rosacea skin dries out more quickly than healthy skin, so you may need to reapply your moisturizer several times a day. Be sure to only use skin products that are alcohol-free, made for sensitive skin, and contain ceramides that help your skin hold onto moisture. Carry a small moisturizer bottle with you, and keep one in the car, along with your sunscreen.  

Reward yourself
