The circulation of blood in our bodies depends on the steady, regular contractions of our heart muscle. The heart ejects blood into the arteries which, in turn, travel to the organs and tissues of our bodies to supply them with oxygen and nutrients. As the arteries reach their destinations, they divide into a network of tiny capillaries. After leaving the body organ or tissue, the capillaries rejoin to form the veins. Veins are responsible for returning the oxygen and nutrient-depleted blood back to the heart.
Veins rely on the contraction of our muscle to propel blood back to the heart. They are also assisted by one-way valves located inside the veins which prevent blood from leaking back into the tissues. When these valves are damaged, blood leaks backward and puts increased pressure on the vein walls. This causes the vein walls to lose elasticity and leads to enlargement and curving of the veins. This is what causes varicose vein disease.
What causes spider veins?
When the pressure increases in the veins, that increased pressure is transmitted to the small vessels in the tissues. The small tissue vessels are very fragile and the increased pressure causes them to burst. When they burst, they produce a characteristic appearance like that of a “sunburst” or a “spider web.” That is why these broken blood vessels are called spider veins.
Hamilton Square, NJ residents should know the three reasons why vein disease treatment is underrated
Reason #1: The value of restoring healthy, younger looking legs is underrated. After putting up with the unpleasant appearance of varicose and spider veins for a long time, the relief that comes with their successful treatment is underrated. Patients no longer have to feel embarrassed by the appearance of their legs. They no longer have to hide their legs. Spider and varicose veins doctor in NJ, Dr. Ahmad, understands what a difference this can make in a person’s self-image and self-confidence.
Reason #2: The value of relieving the painful symptoms of varicose veins is underrated. In addition to the cosmetic ramifications, patients with varicose veins often have to endure swollen legs and ankles, burning and throbbing pain, cramping, itching, bruised legs and leg fatigue. The relief of these symptoms is so marked that patients literally cannot believe how much discomfort they tolerated prior to successful vein treatment. Varicose veins and spider veins have a significant negative impact on quality of life issues.
Reason #3: The increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (clotting of the deep veins) in patients with superficial vein disease is highly underrated. Both varicose veins and spider veins are independent risk factors for deep venous disease, specifically, deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis is a life-threatening complication of vein disease where a piece of the blood clot is knocked loose from its location in the leg, travels upward through the veins and lodges in the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolus. It often causes sudden chest pain and shortness of breath. A pulmonary embolism is potentially lethal.
The treatment of varicose and spider veins has significant cosmetic, quality of life and life-sustaining implications. It is vitally important to remember that the successful treatment of varicose and spider veins has major therapeutic benefits. It is not a question of “Should I get rid of varicose veins?” but instead, “Where is the best vein doctor in NJ who can safely eliminate my varicose and spider veins?”
