Symptoms and Causes of Spider Veins
If you are not sure about whether or not you have spider veins, they are easy to identify. Typically occurring more frequently in women, they appear as small red, blue, or purple, dilated vessels on the surface of the skin. The primary factors contributing to their development include heredity, pregnancy, hormones, weight gain, and prolonged standing or sitting. Usually, the underlying cause is venous insufficiency (leaky valves in the leg veins).
Very few patients with spider veins are asymptomatic. More than 80% will experience significant discomfort, particularly in the legs after extended standing. Some symptoms associated with spider veins can include aching, itching, or burning, and occasionally bleeding. These symptoms signify a serious and underlying, pathological condition known as venous insufficiency.
Treatment Options For Spider Veins
Treating these veins early can prevent worsening symptoms and the possibility of major complications. The longer they are left untreated, the more they can grow and make the underlying venous insufficiency worse.
Transdermal Laser or Intense Pulse Light (IPL) are modalities used to treat spider veins. Currently, we use ND: YAG 1064 laser (Sciton) or BBL for the treatment of spider veins and Intense Pulse Light (BBL-Sciton) for the treatment of rosacea and facial spider veins.
