Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are dilated, superficial blood vessels that sit close to the surface of the skin. They’re small, thin, and often show up as red, blue, purple, or brown. They’re usually most prominent on your legs and feet, but can appear on your face or arms, too.

What causes spider veins?

Increased pressure on your veins causes spider veins, and they’re likely genetic. Pregnancy, hormones and weight gain also contribute to their development. You’ll find them appearing as you age and if you stand for long periods of time.

Spider veins can lead to fatigue and heavy feelings in the legs in 80% of sufferers. You may even have burning and occasional bleeding associated with your spider veins.

How are spider veins treated?

At Comprehensive Vein Treatment Center, Dr. Ahmad offers laser therapy and BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy for treating spider veins. Laser surgery works by sending strong bursts of light into the vein which makes the vein slowly fade and disappear, and blood moves through deeper veins. The methods are noninvasive and don’t require needles or surgery.

Dr. Ahmad offers Forever Young BBL™ treatment by ScitonⓇ. A want delivers energy passed over the treatment areas, causing light energy to improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and sunspots, and – of course – spider veins.

You benefit from a series of BBL treatments, each of which is noninvasive and requires minimal downtime. The light energy fades the appearance of spider veins and stimulates the development of new collagen, a compound your body makes naturally to provide strength and even tone to your skin.

BBL therapy is comfortable for most patients and doesn’t require any topical anesthesia. Treatment sessions last just a few minutes to a full half hour.

Can I manage spider veins at home?

While BBL therapy is most effective, mild cases of spider veins that cause modest symptoms are manageable on your own. Keep your weight at a healthy level and exercise regularly to encourage circulation. Prop up your feet whenever you’re seated. Wear a lightweight compression stocking for support when you do have to stand for long periods of time.

If you have unsightly or painful spider veins, call Comprehensive Vein Treatment Center or book an appointment online to have them resolved today.
